Drive into downtown Ellijay on a Saturday and the change is hard to miss. The square around the old Gilmer County courthouse is busier than it has been in years — storefronts filled, sidewalks crowded, and a new generation of restaurants, shops, and tasting rooms drawing visitors who used to just pass through on their way to the mountains. The Apple Capital of Georgia is having a moment, and much of it is happening right on Main Street.

Downtown Ellijay at a Glance
  • The momentum: A wave of new restaurants, bars, and shops on and around the historic square
  • The backing: Gilmer County is a state-designated “Entrepreneur Friendly” community
  • The growth: The county has added thousands of new residents since 2010
  • The hub: Excel at CORE, a downtown incubator and resource center for local businesses

A historic square, reinvented

Ellijay’s downtown has always been anchored by the courthouse square, but what surrounds it keeps evolving. Historic buildings that once housed jewelers, hardware stores, and five-and-dimes are being carefully renovated rather than torn down — preserving the brick-and-storefront character that gives the town its charm while making room for new ideas.

The most talked-about example is The Roof, a rooftop restaurant built into a renovated historic building on the square, and its sibling The Door, a basement speakeasy-style cocktail bar from the same owners. Together they turned a single downtown building into a day-to-night destination — proof that visitors will linger downtown when there’s something to linger for.

Why it’s happening now

The growth isn’t an accident. Gilmer County has earned Georgia’s “Entrepreneur Friendly” designation for its work cultivating small businesses, and the county has welcomed thousands of new residents over the past decade as remote workers, retirees, and second-home owners discovered the North Georgia mountains. More residents and more visitors mean more demand for places to eat, shop, and gather.

Behind the scenes, a downtown hub called Excel at CORE has operated since 2018 as part incubator, part resource center, and part collaborative workspace, giving new entrepreneurs a place to connect, find mentorship, and get a business off the ground. It is the kind of quiet infrastructure that turns a good idea into an open storefront.

What to watch

The story downtown is still being written. New restaurants, boutiques, coffee shops, and tasting rooms continue to open around the square and along the river, and the calendar of downtown events — from the Fourth of July to the fall festival season — keeps bringing crowds back to Main Street.

For the latest on what’s opening and what’s happening downtown, the Gilmer County Chamber of Commerce keeps a running calendar of community events and business news. If you haven’t walked the square in a year or two, it may be time for another look.
