GBI Charges 19-Year-Old Ellijay Man With Sextortion, Case Now Active

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has arrested and charged a 19-year-old Ellijay man with sexual extortion, closing out a three-week investigation that started with a request from local police. Victor Henry Vicente was booked into the Gilmer County Jail on Monday, September 21, according to the GBI.

Vicente faces charges of sexual extortion and eavesdropping, surveillance, or intercepting communication that invades privacy, the GBI said. Investigators say the case involves the sextortion of a woman, though the agency has not released details about how the two knew each other or how the alleged extortion happened.

The Ellijay Police Department asked the GBI's Georgia Cyber Crime Center to step in on Friday, September 4. That kind of request is standard for cases that involve digital evidence, encrypted messages, or online accounts that go beyond what a local department is equipped to trace on its own.

The GBI describes the investigation as active and ongoing. Once agents finish their work, the case file goes to the Appalachian Judicial Circuit District Attorney's Office, which covers Gilmer County, for prosecution.

What sextortion cases usually look like

Sextortion cases typically involve someone threatening to share private or explicit images or messages unless the victim pays money, sends more images, or complies with other demands. Georgia's Cyber Crime Center in Augusta handles many of these investigations statewide because the evidence usually lives on phones, social media accounts, and messaging apps rather than in a single physical location.

The GBI has not said whether additional charges or arrests could follow as the investigation continues. No court date for Vicente had been set as of this week.
